Veneers

Veneers are thin, tooth-coloured porcelain shells that can be bonded to the front side of the tooth to improve its appearance and aesthetics.

They are a more conservative treatment than crowns, and a lesser amount of the natural tooth structure is removed for the veneer to be fitted. Veneers are an excellent option for treating chipped, discoloured, misaligned, or misshaped teeth or if there are gaps between the teeth that wish to be closed off. Veneers are most used on front teeth and are part of cosmetic dental care.

Veneers usually take two appointments to be completed. On the first appointment, the dentist will prepare the tooth by removing a thin layer of the enamel to allow room for the veneer to be glued into place later. Following this, an impression is taken and sent to our dental lab to manufacture the veneers based on our dentist's specifications.

On the second appointment, the veneer is tried on the tooth to ensure that it fits correctly and that the shape and colour match your natural teeth. Once the dentist and patient are happy, the veneer is cemented permanently onto your teeth.

Caring for Your Veneers

If you want your veneer to last longer, they must be taken care of by regular check-ups with the dentist who fitted them, proper oral hygiene, regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste and flossing after meals. Unlike crowns and bridges, veneers are more prone to breakage if you bite on hard food or objects.

Teeth Whitening

There are many different options in the market for teeth whitening; however, it is recommended that you see a dentist before you engage in any whitening treatment and that it is done with their supervision.

Although whitening is possible for most patients, not everyone is suitable for bleaching. That’s why you must see your dentist, who will conduct a proper examination and ensure that the whitening is right for you.

Some factors can make you unsuitable for teeth whitening. These include:

If you have gum disease,

If you have dentures, dental implants, crowns or veneers (because these don’t bleach),

if your age is not suitable,

if you are pregnant or breastfeeding,

If your permanent teeth are still developing,

if you have defective or absent tooth enamel.

Due to the diverse range of factors that may make you unsuitable for tooth whitening, you must see your dentist and discuss your options.

There are Two Main Tooth Whitening Options

Take-home custom tray

In chair bleaching

At Dento Mak, we have found that the take-home custom tray option is more reliable and has longer-lasting effects; therefore, it is our recommended whitening system.

What Does the System Involve?

First, we take impressions of your teeth and create a mould so that the custom-made bleaching trays are constructed to fit your teeth perfectly. Once they are ready, we provide you with the trays and the bleaching material and instruct you on how to use them effectively at home. It usually takes seven to fourteen days to achieve the colour you want. Most of the time, you achieve up to seven shades brighter teeth than usual. The reason why this works more effectively is that it is done over a more extended period. This is crucial for the whitening gel to work correctly and bleach your teeth. It usually lasts between 18 – 24 months, after which the colour starts to fade. If you want to keep your teeth as white as they can, you must repeat the treatment every two years, so keep your custom trays safe!

You may experience some teeth sensitivity during the bleaching process, but this sensitivity is transient and will go away. Some measures can be taken to reduce the sensitivity, including using fluorides and tooth moose before and during the treatment.

Bleaching is a safe treatment if you follow your dentist's instructions, and it does not damage the teeth.
